Nigerian Journalism Community Mourns Veteran Editor Dotun Oladipo

The Nigerian journalism community is mourning the loss of veteran editor and publisher Dotun Oladipo, who passed away at the age of 56. Both the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) have issued statements honoring his extensive contributions to the media industry.

At just 56, Mr Oladipo leaves behind an indelible legacy in Nigeria’s media industry, having made significant contributions across both traditional and digital journalism.

IPI Nigeria described Oladipo as a committed journalist and entrepreneur dedicated to press freedom throughout his career. He was noted for his dependability and resourcefulness, qualities that led to his appointment as chairman of IPI Nigeria's Programmes Committee in 2024. Despite the demands of running The Eagle Online, which he founded, Oladipo remained actively involved in the institute's affairs, contributing significantly to its annual general meetings and conferences.

The institute highlighted his dedication, recalling an instance where he traveled from Lagos to Abeokuta to represent IPI Nigeria at an engagement, even with a prior commitment in Lagos on the same day. IPI Nigeria stated that his death represents a profound loss, not only to his family and colleagues but also to the broader Nigerian media landscape and the ongoing struggle for press freedom and professional standards.

GOCOP also recognized Oladipo's significant impact, particularly during his tenure as president from 2017 to 2021. During this period, online publishing experienced rapid expansion in Nigeria. GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu credited Oladipo with playing a crucial role in establishing online publishers as a vital component of Nigeria's media industry, leveraging his experience from traditional journalism to navigate the emerging digital space.
