Nigerian Labour Congress to Picket Employers Over Unremitted Pensions from June 1, 2026

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is taking a firm stance against employers who are failing to uphold their obligations regarding workers' pensions. This decisive action, slated for June 1, 2026, signals a new era where the rights and future security of Nigerian workers will be fiercely protected.

For too long, both foreign investors and local employers have exploited the system, deducting pension contributions from employees' salaries without remitting these crucial funds to Pension Fund Administrators. This negligence not only deprives workers of their hard-earned savings but also jeopardizes their retirement prospects, leaving them in a precarious situation, especially as they approach their golden years.

It is unacceptable that despite monthly deductions from workers’ salaries under the Contributory Pension Scheme, many employers have deliberately failed to remit these funds to the appropriate Pension Fund Administrators,” this must stop.

The NLC, through its Lagos State Chapter Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, has made it clear that this practice is unacceptable. The union is stepping in as the "hope of the hopeless, defender of the defenseless, and speaker for the speechless." By collaborating with the National Pension Commission (PenCom) and other stakeholders, the NLC will deploy monitoring and enforcement teams to ensure strict compliance with the Pension Reform Act. Defaulting employers will face prosecution and public exposure, a necessary measure to instill discipline and accountability within the system.
