Nigerian lawmakers demand probe, compensation for deadly train crash

The Nigerian House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation into a fatal train accident that occurred along the Itakpe-Warri rail corridor. The incident, which happened on Monday, resulted in the tragic loss of lives and injuries to several passengers.

Francis Waive, a representative from Delta State, sponsored a motion describing the accident as a "tragic development" that has reignited concerns about safety standards and operational efficiency within the nation's railway system. Initial reports indicate at least four people died, while many others sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals.

On Monday, 8 June, a tragic accident occurred involving a train operating along the Itakpe-Warri rail corridor, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to several passengers and other affected persons.

Waive highlighted the Itakpe-Warri route's significance as a vital standard-gauge railway line connecting Delta, Edo, and Kogi states. The corridor serves thousands of commuters and businesses, playing a critical role in linking Southern and Northern Nigeria and contributing to economic activities.

The House urged the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation, publicly release its findings, and outline specific preventive measures. Furthermore, the lawmakers demanded adequate compensation for all passengers affected by the accident, covering injuries, financial losses, psychological trauma, and inconveniences. The resolution was adopted without debate, reflecting the urgency of the matter.
