Nigerian Legal Luminary Prof. Alfred Kasunmu Dies at 92

Nigeria's legal community is mourning the loss of Professor Alfred Kasunmu (SAN), a distinguished legal scholar and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, who passed away peacefully at the age of 92.

Kasunmu, widely recognized as a towering figure in Nigeria's legal history, significantly influenced legal education, jurisprudence, and practice. His family announced his death, remembering him as a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Born in Lagos in 1934, Kasunmu pursued his legal education at University College London, earning both Bachelor and Master of Laws degrees. He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1964 and began his academic career at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). He later joined the University of Lagos, becoming a Professor of Law and serving as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1973 to 1975.

His public service included a three-year term as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, starting in 1975. He was appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1978, becoming one of the earliest members of the Inner Bar. Kasunmu was also a Notary Public of Nigeria and maintained an active career in legal scholarship and advocacy for decades. He authored several influential legal texts and numerous scholarly articles across various legal subjects.

Leading figures in the legal profession, including former Attorney General of the Federation Chief Bayo Ojo (SAN), paid tribute to Kasunmu, remembering him as a remarkable scholar and gentleman whose impact extended beyond the courtroom and classroom.
