Nigerian Party Condemns Council Chairman's 'Vote APC or Leave' Threat

The Young Progressive Party (YPP) has strongly condemned the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, for allegedly issuing a threat to residents. Shekwolo is accused of telling constituents that they must vote for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election or face relocation from the area.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the YPP, along with its senatorial candidate, Hon. Blessing Ufedojo Benyeogor, released a statement denouncing the chairman's alleged remarks. They asserted that public office holders are obligated to uphold the rule of law, respect citizens' fundamental rights, and foster an environment of peace, dialogue, and democratic principles.

I have said in my area council, it’s either you’re doing APC or leave the area council. I am not arguing with you. With confidence, I am saying it. You know why? I cannot have the minister and president doing for us what they are doing, and on the day of election, you now say you want to match me. I will not agree. It is either you are with us, or you are not here.

In their statement, the YPP highlighted that any form of intimidation directed at citizens, political opponents, or the general public is unacceptable. They stressed that such conduct should be addressed through established legal and democratic channels, rather than through coercive threats. Consequently, they urged relevant authorities and security agencies to launch an investigation into the allegations and ensure the safety and protection of all citizens' rights.

The party also appealed to its supporters and the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the matter is being handled by the appropriate authorities. The incident gained traction after a video of Shekwolo making the alleged threat went viral.
