Nigerian politician urges Muslim women to unite against social vices

Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, the Iya Sunnah of Egbaland and a 2027 deputy governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, has called for unity among Muslim women to combat rising social vices and foster stronger families.

Speaking at the inaugural summit of the Egba Muslim Women Forum in Abeokuta, Sowunmi-Kolapo stressed that mothers are the bedrock of society. She urged them to intentionally instill strong moral values in their children to help them resist threats such as drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism, and general moral decadence.

The summit's theme, “Mothers, Unity and Community Service: Nurturing Strong Families, Building Vibrant Communities,” brought together Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and women leaders. Sowunmi-Kolapo described the forum's inauguration as the start of a movement aimed at strengthening families, empowering women, and contributing to the development of Egbaland.

It is important to note that motherhood is beyond giving birth. It is nurturing faith, discipline, honesty, compassion and excellence.

She highlighted the erosion of family values, exacerbated by economic hardship and the negative influence of social media. "Today, our homes face enormous challenges, including drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism, weakening family values, the negative influence of social media and economic hardship," she stated. Sowunmi-Kolapo encouraged Muslim women to raise children who fear Allah, uphold integrity, and contribute positively to society.
