Nigerian Sports Leaders Advocate Strategic Investment, Transparency for Sector Growth

Leading figures in Nigeria's sports sector have underscored the necessity of transparency, robust infrastructure, and consistent investment to foster long-term growth. These calls to action emerged during the 11th Ladies in Sports International Summit held in Lagos, which convened policymakers, administrators, investors, and advocates to shape the future of sports in Nigeria and across Africa.

Key speakers, including Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, and former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun, stressed that sustainable success in sports hinges on more than just physical facilities. Adeosun emphasized the critical role of governance, stating, "Transparency, accountability, and athlete-centred policies are essential for a thriving sports industry. Structures must be built for sports to thrive, and stakeholders must remain committed to the process."

Philanthropist Yemi Idowu advocated for viewing sports as a vehicle for social change, not solely for commercial profit. "If your intention in sports is profit alone, then you have missed its true purpose. Sports is fundamentally a social service, offering disadvantaged youth opportunities to rise above poverty and build meaningful livelihoods," he stated. Idowu also called for public investment in facilities and youth programs, suggesting regional assessments to align infrastructure with community needs.

Bukola Olopade highlighted the National Sports Commission's ongoing efforts to cultivate a supportive environment, enhance private-sector collaborations, and uncover new economic avenues. The summit's convener, Tega Onojaife, reflected on the event's decade-long journey, attributing its continuity to stakeholder support. The theme, "Beyond the Games: Power, Profit and Purpose," underscored the increasing recognition of sports' potential to drive economic development, social impact, and nation-building.
