Nigerian startup hits 10bn OpenAI tokens

ProtonLabs Technology, an artificial intelligence startup founded in Nigeria and based in the UK, has achieved a significant milestone by processing over 10 billion tokens on OpenAI's platform. This accomplishment positions the company among an elite group recognized by OpenAI for the scale of operations running on its technology.

The company, known for its AskYourPDF platform, announced its inclusion in OpenAI's Token Milestones list on Tuesday. Founded by Isaac Mayowa David, Emmanuel Olarewaju David, and Yackson Kayode Oluwasesan, ProtonLabs' recognition stems from its extensive use of OpenAI's AI systems. Tokens are the fundamental units of text that AI language models process when interpreting prompts, analyzing information, or generating responses; the number of tokens used typically correlates with the complexity and volume of text processed.

For ProtonLabs, this milestone signifies activity across its AskYourPDF platform, encompassing document analysis, embedded AI agents, and workflow automation tools, not solely document-based conversations. Initially launched to enable users to query uploaded documents in natural language, AskYourPDF has evolved into a broader enterprise solution. Businesses can deploy AI-powered agents on their websites through the platform, allowing customers to receive answers based on company-specific information, including products, services, and policies.

Co-founder and chief technology officer Emmanuel David stated that the milestone reflects the substantial work occurring across the platform and the engineering required to reliably support diverse use cases. He noted that document analysis, website agents, and automated workflows each present unique demands on the underlying AI systems. The platform's capabilities extend to extracting information from files, identifying fields within PDFs, and assisting with form completion, thereby automating administrative processes that would otherwise require manual review and data entry.
