Nigerian students' body gives Ogun govt 72 hours to rescue abducted students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government, demanding swift action for the rescue of students abducted from Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade. The ultimatum, delivered by NANS Secretary-General Oladimeji Uthman, also calls for the prosecution of individuals responsible for the recent killing of a student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori.

Sekinat Ahmed, an HND II student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, was killed during a robbery attack in the Eruku community on July 27. Uthman warned that failure to meet NANS's demands within the stipulated deadline would result in a statewide protest. Student leaders from various institutions, including Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, were present at the press conference.

Uthman expressed concern over the rising incidents of kidnappings, robberies, and violent attacks, stating they reflect poorly on the security situation surrounding tertiary institutions in Ogun State. "Failure to meet these demands within the stipulated 72 hours will leave the national students’ body with no option but to commence a sustained peaceful mass actions and statewide protest," he declared.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and Governor Dapo Abiodun in deploying an operational police aircraft to enhance security, Uthman stressed the need for more concrete measures. NANS demands increased security patrols, the establishment of permanent security posts, and the deployment of the Ogun Anti-Violent Crime Team to vulnerable campuses. The association also seeks stronger collaboration between schools, communities, security agencies, and student leaders to bolster campus safety.
