Nigerian students demand investigation into Lagos building collapse

The National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West (Zone D), has called for a thorough investigation into the recent building collapse in Lekki, Lagos State. The student body extended its sympathies to the victims and their families, specifically mentioning Mr. John Asabere, who was described as a hardworking father and breadwinner lost in the tragedy.

It is disheartening that despite advancements in construction technology and regulatory frameworks, avoidable structural failures continue to claim lives that could have been saved through strict compliance with building standards and effective monitoring.

NANS condemned the persistent incidents of building collapse across Nigeria, particularly in Lagos. The association stressed that strict compliance with construction standards and effective monitoring by regulatory agencies are crucial to preventing such avoidable tragedies. They questioned the role of agencies like the Lagos State Building Control Agency, whose mandate includes ensuring construction projects meet approved specifications and safety regulations.

The student body also expressed concern over allegations that the severity of the incident and the number of fatalities are being downplayed. NANS stated that such actions, if true, demonstrate a profound disregard for human life and an attempt to deny grieving families justice.

Therefore, NANS Southwest urged all relevant security and investigative agencies to conduct a transparent and unbiased investigation. They called for resistance against any interference or cover-up that could compromise the integrity of the inquiry, emphasizing the need for accountability for all parties found culpable.
