Nigerian students suspend protest after Ondo govt approves 60% subvention increase

The planned protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Ondo State Axis, has been called off. The student body announced the suspension of their demonstration, initially scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Akure.

This decision comes after what NANS described as a "positive intervention" by the Ondo State Government. The government has approved a significant 60% increase in monthly subventions for all state-owned tertiary institutions. NANS believes this measure will bolster the institutions' financial capacity, ensure timely salary payments, and enhance the overall learning environment.

In addition to the subvention increase, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and university unions across applicable state institutions. NANS views these actions as crucial steps toward addressing staff welfare concerns, restoring industrial harmony, and enabling uninterrupted academic activities.

NANS leadership, represented by Comrade Adekanye Mayomi, Comrade Oladele Oluwafemi, and Comrade Johnpaul Alabi, engaged in constructive dialogue with the state government. They emphasized that their role extends beyond protests to include negotiation and demanding concrete solutions for students' interests. The association expressed appreciation for the government's engagement and willingness to address the challenges affecting tertiary education in the state.
