Nigerian swimmer Adama Abduljabar exits Commonwealth Games in semi-finals

Teenager Adama Abduljabar's journey at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games swimming events concluded Saturday, as he narrowly missed a spot in the Men's 50m Freestyle final. Despite a determined effort against a world-class field, Abduljabar finished sixth in his semi-final heat with a time of 22.44 seconds.

Abduljabar, Nigeria's sole representative in the swimming pool at the Games, had previously made history by reaching the semi-finals. His performance in the 50m Freestyle saw him finish just behind swimmers from Australia, Canada, Singapore, and the Bahamas. Earlier, he competed in the 100m butterfly, placing seventh in his heat.

Though he did not reach the medal race, Abduljabar's campaign is seen as a significant milestone for Nigerian swimming. He arrived at the Games as an African junior record holder and the first Nigerian to medal at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships. His progress in a competitive sprint event underscores his rising profile and offers a hopeful outlook for the future of the sport in Nigeria.
