Nigerian Traders Seek China’s Support for Cataract Outreach, AI Training

The Made in China Goods Traders Association of Nigeria has formally requested support from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos for several key initiatives. These include facilitating a cataract treatment outreach for underprivileged residents, providing opportunities for artificial intelligence training, offering scholarships, and enabling participation in major trade exhibitions in China.

In a letter dated August 17, National President Oluwole Adigun appealed to Chinese Consul-General Mrs. Yan Yuqing for assistance. The request follows the association's executives' participation in a Bamboo and Rattan Seminar organized by Chinese authorities. Adigun expressed the association's readiness to collaborate with the Consulate to identify beneficiaries and coordinate the cataract treatment outreach, aiming to restore sight to vulnerable individuals who cannot afford surgery.

Furthermore, the traders sought consideration for qualified members to join the Chinese Government's plan to train 5,000 Nigerians in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. They also requested undergraduate and master's degree scholarships offered by the Chinese Government. Adigun believes these programs will build capacity among traders, enabling them to contribute more effectively to Nigeria's economic and technological advancement.

Regarding trade, the association requested the Consulate's help in facilitating members' participation in two significant international exhibitions: the China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) from October 15 to November 4, 2026, and the China International Import Expo from November 5 to 10, 2026. The association anticipates that these engagements will help members establish business contacts, explore new markets, and develop investment partnerships, thereby promoting technology transfer and strengthening Nigeria-China bilateral trade. Adigun also conveyed appreciation for the Bamboo and Rattan Seminar, noting its value in broadening understanding for sustainable development.
