Nigerian troops arrest kidnap commander, recover $1,000 and weapons

Nigerian troops have apprehended a suspected commander of a kidnapping syndicate during an operation in a forest in Enugu State, southeastern Nigeria. The arrest is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.

The arrest followed an earlier operation in which troops neutralised one member of the syndicate and apprehended another.

The operation, described as "coordinated intelligence-led," was a direct response to the abduction of a seminarian and a worshipper from a Catholic Church in Udi Local Government Area on August 2. Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, spokesman for the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, stated that the troops neutralized one syndicate member and apprehended another in an earlier phase of the operation.

Subsequent intelligence gathered from the arrested suspect led troops to the concealed arms cache of the group. The army reported recovering US$1,000, ₦785,900 in cash, four AK-47 rifles, seven AK-47 magazines, and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition. The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation to aid further operations aimed at tracking down other fleeing members of the syndicate and their collaborators.

Ayeni emphasized that these successful operations highlight the effectiveness of intelligence-driven joint operations in disrupting organized criminal networks. The army, in collaboration with other security agencies under Operation Udo Ka, remains committed to pursuing criminals and ensuring a secure environment for socio-economic activities to flourish across the South-east region.
