Nigerian troops uncover shallow grave, exhume remains of late community leader

Nigerian troops have uncovered and exhumed the remains of Ibe Anyadu, a community leader from Aggah in Imo State, who was allegedly murdered by a criminal gang. The discovery was made on Sunday by troops operating under Operation UDO KA and Operation EASTERN SANITY II.

During interrogation, one of the suspects confessed to his involvement in the murder of Anyadu and volunteered to lead troops to the burial site.

According to a statement by Lieutenant-Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, acting deputy director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, the exhumation followed intelligence-driven operations that led to the arrest of suspects linked to violent crimes in the South-east. One suspect confessed to Anyadu's murder and guided troops to a shallow grave within Umudike Forest, a known criminal camp.

On 2 August, the suspects guided troops to a shallow grave within Umudike Forest, one of the criminals’ known camps, where the remains of the late community leader were successfully exhumed.

The exhumation was conducted in the presence of Anyadu's family members, local vigilante personnel, and community representatives. The family provided a coffin and ambulance for a dignified burial in accordance with their customs. Major-General Oluremi Fadairo, Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, "Operation UDO KA," extended condolences to the family and vowed that the suspects would face prosecution.
