Nigerians Abroad Urged to Preserve Culture and Foster Unity by Yoruba Leaders

Traditional Yoruba leaders, including the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, and monarchs from Oro Kingdom, have called on Nigerians in the Diaspora to prioritize cultural preservation and unity. The appeal was made during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) Canada, where community members gathered to reflect on the organization's achievements.

Iba Adams, represented by Alhaji Luqman Adedire, the Worldwide Secretary-General of OPU, urged members to recommit to unity, education, and community development. He described the anniversary as a testament to the resilience and commitment of Yoruba people in Canada. Adams stressed that fostering unity among Yoruba people globally is central to OPU's mission, viewing unity as the bedrock of Yoruba culture, traditions, and values that transcend borders and generations.

The Yoruba School is more than an educational institution; it is a cultural sanctuary where traditions, values and history are passed down with pride and authenticity.

A significant highlight was the recognition of the OPU Canada Yoruba School, which Adams identified as a critical platform for promoting the Yoruba language and culture among younger generations. He asserted that language is the soul of culture, and by teaching Yoruba to children and youth, the union ensures the continuation of the Yoruba people's rich heritage in the Diaspora. Adams encouraged continued support for the school and participation in OPU North America initiatives to ensure the Yoruba people remain united, proud, and prosperous for generations to come.
