Nilson Angulo starts again for Sunderland in the Premier League

Nilson Angulo is becoming a regular starter for Sunderland. The Ecuadorian winger began the club’s first three Premier League matches, most recently in Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Brentford.

The 23-year-old played until the 64th minute before Wilson Isidor replaced him. Although Angulo has been substituted in the second half of each match, his continued presence in the starting lineup stands out as he builds his place in the English side.

Sunderland fell behind when Vitaly Janelt opened the scoring, but Enzo Le Fee converted a late penalty to secure a point. The result left Sunderland with four points from three games, following one win, one draw and one defeat, and in the middle part of the table.

The season represents an important step in Angulo’s consolidation in England. The player from Quinindé joined Sunderland in 2026 and has a contract running until June 30, 2030. He has already scored once and is also in contention for an award because of that goal.

Sunderland will next face Hull City in the EFL Cup on Sept. 8. The team then returns to Premier League action on Sept. 12 against Arsenal, whose squad includes fellow Ecuadorian Piero Hincapié. Brentford, meanwhile, missed the chance to climb higher but remains unbeaten after three rounds. Fulham lost 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace and remains without a point.
