NiMet, NCCC to sign MoU on climate services, data management

Nigeria's Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) are strengthening their collaboration through a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership aims to bolster climate services, enhance climate data management, and advance national climate resilience efforts.

The decision follows a recent meeting where NiMet's Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, visited the NCCC Secretariat and met with its Director-General, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi. Prof. Anosike highlighted NiMet's role as the custodian of Nigeria's long-term meteorological records, emphasizing the critical need for this baseline atmospheric data in analyzing climate trends, assessing risks, and developing reliable climate projections.

Both leaders stressed the importance of closer institutional ties for co-developing climate projections, reinforcing early warning systems, standardizing climate data, and conducting joint research. This collaboration is expected to provide policymakers with localized, science-based information essential for implementing effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. It will also improve the downscaling of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors.

Prof. Anosike further noted that high-quality meteorological and climate data is a prerequisite for Nigeria to access international climate finance. He suggested exploring joint funding proposals for climate resilience, early warning systems, and infrastructure projects that will enhance Nigeria's capacity to respond to climate change. The NCCC welcomed the initiative, affirming a shared commitment to advancing national climate policy and protecting lives and livelihoods.
