Nine dead, dozens wounded as Russia launches major attack across Ukraine

Russia launched a significant air assault across Ukraine on Tuesday, striking major cities and causing casualties and widespread damage. At least nine people died and more than 60 were injured in attacks that hit residential buildings and infrastructure in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv.

In Dnipro, five people were killed and 25 injured when a Russian missile and drone attack struck the southeastern city. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha shared images on Telegram showing destroyed homes, burnt vehicles, and a damaged playground. In the capital, Kyiv, at least four people died and 51 were injured, including children. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a suspected missile strike caused a 24-story apartment building to collapse, potentially trapping residents. Another nine-story building was set ablaze by missile debris, and fires broke out in open areas, including near a kindergarten.

Thousands of Kyiv residents sought shelter in the subway system as air raid sirens wailed across the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had reiterated warnings of a possible major assault, stating that intelligence indicated a massive strike was possible and that defenders were prepared. Russia had previously warned of "systematic strikes" on targets in Kyiv linked to the Ukrainian military and decision-making centers, citing a drone strike on a dormitory in Russian-held Luhansk as retaliation, which Ukraine denied.

Meanwhile, a drone and missile attack in Kharkiv injured 10 people, including a child. In Russia's Krasnodar region, a drone attack caused a fire at the Ilsky oil refinery. Air defense systems were also reportedly repelling drone attacks over Sevastopol in occupied Crimea.
