Nine Phenomena to Bring Heavy to Intense Rains to 23 Mexican States

Mexico is bracing for significant weather events as nine atmospheric phenomena are set to bring heavy to intense rains to 23 states this Sunday. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned of potential flooding, landslides, and river overflows due to the expected downpours.

The primary drivers of this weather pattern include the Mexican monsoon, a cold front, a low-pressure system, atmospheric instability, cyclonic circulations, troughs, tropical wave number 23, an anticyclone, and a heatwave. The most intense rainfall is anticipated in Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, and Nayarit. Very strong rains are also forecast for Sonora, Zacatecas, Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero, and Chiapas.

Additionally, strong localized rains are expected in Coahuila, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, and Oaxaca. These rains may be accompanied by electrical discharges and hail, potentially causing flash floods. Strong winds could also lead to fallen trees and damaged signage. The Pacific coast is expected to experience wave heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters in various sections.

While many states face heavy rainfall, the northwest region, including Baja California and Sonora, will continue to experience extreme temperatures, with highs possibly exceeding 45 degrees Celsius due to a lingering heatwave. This heatwave will also affect Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, with temperatures ranging from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, though it is expected to conclude in several northwestern states.
