Nine police killed, 28 injured in Pakistan militant attack

Nine police personnel died and 28 were injured in a militant attack on a police check post in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The assault occurred late Wednesday in the Hangu district, near the Afghan border. Militants initially attacked the Khazana check post with heavy weapons, killing Deputy Superintendent of Police Diyar Khan. As additional forces arrived to reinforce the checkpoint, they were ambushed by the militants, severely damaging an armored personnel carrier. "Nine police personnel have been martyred, while 28 personnel, including DSP Mujahid Hussain, have been injured," the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police stated. In the ensuing retaliatory operation, police reported killing 15 militants, referred to as “khawarij,” and wounding several others. The confrontation was ongoing, and no group had immediately claimed responsibility. The Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been responsible for numerous attacks against security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since 2007. Pakistan has previously accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government of sheltering TTP militants, a charge Kabul denies. This attack occurred just hours after Pakistan’s military announced that security forces had killed 32 militants in intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces over the preceding 24 hours. This incident follows a July 24 attack in Tank district where militants killed 15 people, including 12 soldiers, two police officers, and a government official.
