Niš residents demand changes to railway bypass route, set 10-day deadline

Residents of Humska Street in Niš are demanding that the city and relevant institutions present concrete changes to the draft general urban plan within 10 days. The proposed changes must address their concerns regarding the construction of a railway bypass.

The "Humska ne sme da (ne) stane" (Humska must not (not) stop) civic initiative stated that a recent protest highlighted residents' refusal to accept solutions that would permanently disrupt their daily lives. Specifically, they oppose the plan to close a railway crossing, which they consider a vital traffic connection in their part of the city.

The initiative expects authorities to consider their justified demands and propose amendments to the draft plan concerning Humska Street. Representatives of the organizing committee believe there is sufficient time to find a solution through dialogue and responsible action that protects the public interest and prevents decisions with lasting negative consequences for thousands of citizens. They warned that if a concrete solution respecting their demands is not offered within 10 days, they will organize another protest and continue with all democratic forms of struggle to defend the interests of the residents of Humska Street and surrounding areas. A petition has also been launched to demand changes to the draft general urban plan.
