NIWA intensifies waterways safety campaign as floods threaten communities

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is stepping up its marine safety and environmental protection campaign in waterfront communities across Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative aims to mitigate the increased risks of accidents and pollution associated with rising water levels during the peak of the rainy season.

The Abuja Area/Liaison Office of NIWA conducted a sensitization exercise in Abaji Area Council, educating residents on safe navigation practices and environmental protection. Hajia Aisha Eri, the Area Manager, emphasized NIWA's commitment to safeguarding inland waterways and protecting the lives of those who depend on them. She urged residents, boat operators, and community leaders to strictly follow safety regulations and environmental best practices.

The Emir of Kwali, Alhaji Adamu Aguma, lauded NIWA's initiative and pledged the support of traditional institutions in ensuring compliance with waterways safety regulations. This sensitization exercise is part of a broader, nationwide directive issued by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

The Minister mandated regular engagement with littoral communities to promote waterways safety and environmental protection. NIWA's Acting Managing Director, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has instructed all Area Offices to prioritize this campaign as a crucial effort to reduce boat mishaps and preserve the nation's inland waterways.
