NMA inaugurates new Enugu secretariat, calls for unity

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Enugu State branch has officially unveiled its new state secretariat, a development hailed by senior medical practitioners and stakeholders as a crucial institutional milestone for doctors in the region. The inauguration also served as a platform for the outgoing leadership to appeal for reconciliation and unity within the association.

Outgoing NMA Chairman, Dr. Sunday Okafor, emphasized that the new secretariat symbolizes a strengthening of the association's capacity. He noted that the previous office was inadequate, describing it as a "shop extension." Okafor highlighted the challenges faced in securing a permanent office, including internal disagreements, but expressed satisfaction that the vision for a decent operational space has materialized.

When we came on board, NMA Enugu State operated from what is best described as a shop. It wasn’t befitting that this body would actually be using a shop extension.

"Today, NMA Enugu State has a decent office space from where it can operate and continue the work of delivering quality healthcare services to our people," Okafor stated. He urged members to sustain the spirit of unity, emphasizing that collective interests should always supersede personal ones for the association to remain strong.

The event also focused on the upcoming Annual General Meeting and elections. Dr. Okafor highlighted the theme: "Mitigating Health Workforce Migration in Nigeria: The Enugu State Experience." He called for members who had distanced themselves from the organization to reunite, stressing that achievements during his tenure were possible due to collective effort.

The new secretariat was dedicated by Bishop Samuel Ike of the Anglican Diocese of Enugu, who implored medical practitioners to uphold their professional ethics and continue their selfless service to humanity.
