NMA secures bail for Prof. Martin Aghaji after DSS arrest over alleged economic crime

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has successfully intervened to secure the release on bail of Professor Martin Aghaji, a distinguished consultant cardiac surgeon. Professor Aghaji had been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges related to alleged economic crimes.

His arrest occurred at his residence in Enugu on July 2, 2026, and he was subsequently transferred to the DSS Lagos State Command. The NMA's Lagos State branch chairman, Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed, confirmed that the association was alerted by the DSS Director and immediately mobilized.

I was called by the Director, DSS Lagos State Command, who informed me about the arrest of Prof. Martin Aghaji. I then informed the Chairman, NMA Enugu State, and the national NMA.

A delegation comprising NMA national and state officials visited the DSS Lagos Command on July 5, 2026. They facilitated the completion of Professor Aghaji's bail process, releasing him on liberal terms. The NMA stated that details of the allegations remain confidential due to the ongoing investigation.

While the NMA has secured Professor Aghaji's release, the association emphasized its continued monitoring of the situation. They affirmed their dedication to safeguarding the rights and welfare of medical practitioners, balanced with recognizing the security agencies' mandate for lawful investigations.
