NMG Staff to Work Remotely As Company Assesses Offices for Full Reopening

Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda employees will continue working remotely as the company evaluates its offices before a full reopening. This directive follows the resumption of the media house's television, radio, print, and digital platforms.

While operations are back online, staff will not return to the Namuwongo headquarters and Serena broadcast facilities until management completes its assessment and clears the premises. Internal Human Resources communications state that any staff required to return immediately will be contacted directly by their supervisors with specific instructions.

The company has been preparing for this resumption for weeks, with editorial teams developing business continuity plans and journalists maintaining virtual meetings. A journalist, speaking anonymously, noted that while newsroom managers kept staff informed, the prolonged closure impacted morale due to uncertainty about the reopening.

Employees at Commercial Plaza, housing The EastAfrican newspaper and other departments, have been directed to return to physical work as those premises were unaffected. However, a source familiar with operations indicated that Commercial Plaza could not function at full capacity because key services relied on the Namuwongo and Serena facilities, which were shut down on June 28 after security forces sealed them.

The reopening announcement has brought relief and cautious optimism. For many, it eased concerns about job security and the media house's future. The shutdown was particularly challenging for freelancers and those whose income depended on daily operations, as the suspension drastically reduced work and earning opportunities.
