No-Confidence Motion Against Minister Harsahna Nanayakkara Defeated

Parliament has defeated a no-confidence motion brought against Justice and National Integration Minister Harsahna Nanayakkara. The opposition's motion was overwhelmingly rejected, with 152 votes against it and only 36 in favor.

The no-confidence motion against Justice and National Integration Minister Harsahna Nanayakkara, presented by the opposition, was defeated in Parliament by a majority of 116 votes.

The debate, which lasted from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM, preceded the vote. Members of the National People's Power (NPP) voted against the motion. Those who supported the motion included members from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), along with MPs Jeevan Thondaman and Archuna Ramanathan.

The motion received 152 votes against and only 36 votes in favor.

The no-confidence motion, submitted on July 21st and signed by 37 MPs including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, accused Minister Nanayakkara of dereliction of duty. Specifically, it cited his alleged failure to take timely and adequate measures to resolve a clash at the Welikada Prison on July 6th. The motion claimed his inaction intensified the conflict and endangered prison officers by sending them to the scene without proper planning.
