'No criminal offence' by gardaí in Fitzgerald shooting

An investigation into the fatal shooting of Evan Fitzgerald in Carlow has concluded that police officers committed no criminal offense or breach of discipline. The 22-year-old died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre on June 1, 2025. Fitzgerald and two others were arrested by police after he attempted to purchase firearms, including a military-grade assault rifle, online. His two friends received suspended sentences for their involvement. Fitzgerald was identified as the individual intending to procure the weapons on the dark web, and all three were apprehended in a police sting operation. The Police Ombudsman's office, Fiosrú, stated that its independent investigation is now closed, having found no act or omission by any officer resulted in serious harm or death to Fitzgerald. Fiosrú has liaised with Fitzgerald's family, who have been notified of the outcome and offered condolences. The inquest into Fitzgerald's death is pending, and Fiosrú will make no further comment to preserve its integrity. Previously, the Police Ombudsman decided no further action was needed after the former Justice Minister raised concerns about alleged "entrapment" and "untruths" told to a judge, which Fiosrú examined and dismissed.
