No Scientific Proof Eucalyptus Oil Cuts Fuel Use, Indonesian Expert Says

Claims circulating on social media that mixing eucalyptus oil into gasoline boosts vehicle fuel efficiency lack scientific backing, according to an Indonesian university lecturer. Leopold Oscar Nelwan, from IPB University's Faculty of Engineering and Technology, urged the public to be skeptical of unsubstantiated assertions.

There is still no adequate scientific evidence that this method consistently increases the fuel efficiency of standard production vehicles.

Nelwan acknowledged that some research has explored eucalyptus oil as a fuel blend, noting that specific formulations, in certain proportions, may enhance engine performance and reduce emissions. However, he stressed that these studies used scientifically designed oil, distinct from the common practice of adding small amounts of commercial eucalyptus oil to vehicle tanks.

"There is still no adequate scientific evidence that this method consistently increases the fuel efficiency of standard production vehicles," Nelwan stated. He explained that eucalyptus oil's compounds can alter fuel properties, but the extent of change depends heavily on the composition and quantity used. He differentiated between fuel blends, used in significant proportions, and additives, which require specific mechanisms to be effective, noting that commercial eucalyptus oil lacks a proven mechanism for fuel efficiency.

This is different from the common practice in society, which is adding commercial eucalyptus oil in small amounts to vehicle tanks.

Beyond unproven benefits, Nelwan cautioned about potential risks. The variable composition of commercial eucalyptus oil and its unsuitability as fuel raise concerns about its long-term effects on fuel systems, engine components, and overall vehicle durability. He recommended scientifically proven fuel-saving methods, such as maintaining tire pressure, routine maintenance, using manufacturer-specified oil and fuel, reducing vehicle load, and adopting smooth driving techniques.
