No third term agenda, Mahama assures Ghanaians on presidential term limits

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly stated his adherence to Ghana's constitutional presidential term limits, dispelling any notions of a "third term agenda." During a citizen engagement in Ho, Mahama reiterated his commitment to the four-year term limit stipulated in the constitution.

The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one additional term, and I remain fully committed to fulfilling the promises I made to them.

Mahama acknowledged that two citizens have petitioned the Supreme Court for an interpretation of Article 66(1) and (2), which defines presidential tenure. However, he asserted that his understanding of the provision is unambiguous. "The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one additional term, and I remain fully committed to fulfilling the promises I made to them," he stated, emphasizing that the constitution is clear on the matter.

What I know is that the people of Ghana entrusted me with one additional term, and I will continue to work diligently to honour that trust.

This is not the first time Mahama has addressed such concerns, having previously dismissed any interest in a third term during a state visit to Singapore last year. He is currently serving his second non-consecutive term, having held the presidency from January 7, 2013, to January 6, 2017.

Beyond term limits, President Mahama also spoke on accountability, assuring citizens that his government does not pursue political vendettas. He stressed that legal action would be taken if evidence established wrongdoing, regardless of the individual's position. "No individual will be prosecuted because of political vendetta.
