Noboa to Meet China's Xi, Singapore and Vietnam Prime Ministers on Asian Tour

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa is set to embark on a significant diplomatic and economic tour of Asia, visiting China, Singapore, and Vietnam from August 16 to 28. The primary objective of this trip is to deepen bilateral relations and explore new avenues for investment and trade.

In this trip, we will have a meeting with President Xi Jinping, also with Prime Minister Li Qiang, and with the President of the National People's Congress. The meetings with them will serve to continue strengthening areas of common interest.

During his visit to China, Noboa will meet with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening common interests, particularly China's potential investment in Ecuador's energy and mining sectors. Ecuador also aims to increase its exports to China. Key issues on the agenda include addressing China's suspension of certain Ecuadorian shrimp exports due to detected substances and virus concerns, renegotiating terms for Ecuador's debt with Eximbank, and discussing the operational status of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant, Ecuador's largest, which was formally handed over by Chinese state company Sinohydro despite known structural issues.

In Singapore, Ecuador sees an opportunity to leverage the city-state's position as a global logistics and technology hub. "Singapore is a much smaller country, but it has positioned itself as a logistics and technology center," stated Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Roberto Kury. "Everything they consume, they import, so there is an opportunity for Ecuador to export products to Singapore, not just for domestic consumption, but as an entry point to other Asian countries."

Vietnam is viewed as a complementary market for Ecuadorian agricultural products. Kury highlighted that both nations have needs that the other can fulfill, presenting a chance to further open doors and strengthen Ecuador's global relationships. This visit marks Noboa's first trip to Vietnam and Singapore, with a previous planned visit to Vietnam in August 2023 having been canceled.
