NongHyup Bolsters Support for Farmers Amidst Heatwave and Drought

NongHyup, South Korea's agricultural cooperative, is intensifying its support for farmers and livestock producers grappling with the severe impacts of ongoing heatwaves and drought. The organization has launched comprehensive measures to minimize damage and ensure the well-being of agricultural communities across the country.

Central to these efforts are on-site inspections and expanded preventative activities. NongHyup Economic Holdings' Livestock Economy Representative Director, Ahn Byung-woo, visited livestock farms in Boseong, South Jeolla Province, to assess the situation and response readiness. The organization plans to operate a comprehensive situation room until the end of the month to continuously monitor vulnerable farms and provide swift assistance in case of damage.

To combat the extreme heat, NongHyup is deploying 540 mobile disinfection units daily to provide sprinkler services for livestock facilities. Additionally, they are distributing heat-stress reduction agents, vitamins, probiotics, and mineral blocks to maintain animal health. NongHyup Feed and NongHyup Hanwoo are also providing special nutritional feed, cooling vests, hats, and water, while NongHyup Feed is supplying vitamins and amino acids.

It is important to minimize the damage to farmers and livestock producers who are suffering from the record-breaking heatwave and drought.

For crop farmers, NongHyup Economic Holdings' Agricultural Economy Representative Director, Kim Joo-yang, inspected farms in Gimhae and Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, affected by sun-scorched damage due to heat and drought. Plans are in motion to provide preventative agents, emergency water pumps, and "farming disaster recovery kits." NongHyup's Rural Support Department is also checking water supply status, pump availability, and crop growth in key agricultural areas.

NongHyup is reinforcing its on-site response system by identifying and incentivizing exemplary practices among its branches nationwide. Currently, the cooperative operates 5,927 heatwave shelters and has prepared 320,000 neck coolers and 1 million fans. They are also distributing 1 million servings of onion juice and 200,000 leaflets on heatwave safety to visiting farmers. NongHyup Chairman Kang Ho-dong emphasized the critical importance of minimizing damage for farmers and pledged to concentrate the organization's capabilities on providing timely and practical support to ensure stable farming and livestock activities.
