North Kalimantan Transportation Agency focuses on port rehabilitation and facility construction in 2026

The Transportation Agency of North Kalimantan (Dishub Kaltara) is prioritizing the rehabilitation and construction of vital port facilities in 2026. Key projects will target the Tengkayu I Port in Tarakan City and the Liem Hie Djung Cross-Border Sea Port (PLBL) in Nunukan Regency, aiming to significantly upgrade services and safety for passengers.

At Tengkayu I Port, the agency plans to build a new waiting lounge, renovate the jetty area, and construct pedestrian walkways connecting the parking lot to the terminal. Additionally, the procurement of more cargo trolleys is deemed urgent due to the current shortage and damage to existing units. "Trolleys are important to assist port services and make it easier for passengers to carry their luggage," stated Head of Dishub Kaltara, Idham Chalid.

Meanwhile, the PLBL Liem Hie Djung port will see a primary focus on maintaining its pontoons, which have developed leaks. Idham explained that pontoons require annual docking, similar to ships, a practice that has been neglected. "The principle is that the ponton is like a ship; it actually needs docking every year, which has never happened," he said. Although the pontoon damage is severe, repairs are still feasible.

Dishub Kaltara has allocated Rp160 million for the pontoon maintenance, a cost Idham highlighted as far more economical than purchasing a new pontoon, which could cost up to Rp7 billion. "This is our concern because it impacts the safety of passengers or people on the pontoon," he added. Maintenance will also extend to the port's parking area, where paving blocks have become uneven and damaged. These strategic improvements at both ports, one a vital point in the border region and the other a main transit hub, underscore the agency's commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and safety.
