North Kivu: Eringeti-Kainama axis deteriorates, users and merchants demand its rehabilitation

The Eringeti-Kainama road, approximately 45 kilometers long in the Beni territory of North Kivu, has fallen into severe disrepair. Its current state makes travel difficult on many sections, significantly complicating the movement of people and goods between North Kivu and Ituri provinces, according to witnesses.

Users, transporters, and merchants are urgently calling for the rehabilitation of this route, which is considered vital for trade and supplying numerous localities. The heavy rains experienced in July have further exacerbated the road's condition. Sections in areas like Mayisafi, Kamungu, Atonza, Manzatu, Bulemba, and Kakuka are now plagued by deep mud and potholes, making passage extremely challenging.

Trucks carrying agricultural products and timber are struggling to reach Eringeti and Beni. Motorcyclists, who rely on this route as a primary mode of transport, also face significant obstacles in reaching Kainama. This deterioration has led to a decrease in traffic and complicated the delivery of goods, negatively impacting local commercial activities.

Beyond its economic importance, the Eringeti-Kainama road plays a crucial role in accessing healthcare, facilitating the evacuation of patients with urgent needs to health facilities in Eringeti, Oïcha, and Beni. The road's poor condition also affects security, hindering the mobility of defense and security forces in a region frequently targeted by ADF rebels and other armed groups. Local populations fear progressive isolation and implore authorities to expedite rehabilitation efforts to maintain circulation, economic activities, and access to essential services. The company responsible for the road's maintenance has not yet responded to these appeals.
