North Korea denounces US-South Korea drills, calls them a nuclear alliance

North Korea has strongly denounced the upcoming joint military drills between the United States and South Korea, labeling them as more provocative than previous exercises. State media outlet KCNA reported that the North views the growing military cooperation between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea as a de facto nuclear alliance.

In response to this perceived escalation, North Korea declared its intention to counter a "new level of threat" with a "new level of deterrent." This statement signals a hardening stance amid rising regional tensions. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) joint military drills are scheduled to run from August 17 to 27, incorporating advanced countermeasures against drones, GPS disruption, and cyberattacks, reflecting adaptations to North Korea's evolving military capabilities.

Pyongyang routinely condemns these exercises, viewing them as direct provocations that destabilize the Korean Peninsula. The North also accused the United States of pursuing a new nuclear strategy that lowers the threshold for nuclear weapon use, potentially pushing global security to the brink of nuclear war. KCNA cited U.S. nuclear cooperation with South Korea and its extended deterrence commitments to Japan as evidence, suggesting the Korean Peninsula could become a primary target of this alleged strategy.
