North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile into East Sea Ahead of Joint Military Drills

North Korea resumed its missile provocations on Tuesday morning, firing a ballistic missile into the East Sea. This marks the first such launch in six days and the 11th this year. The South Korean military detected the missile launch from the Wonsan area around 6 a.m. local time. South Korea and the United States are currently conducting a detailed analysis of the missile's specifications, flight trajectory, and range.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the South Korean military is strengthening its surveillance and readiness posture to prepare for any additional provocations. South Korea, the U.S., and Japan are closely sharing information regarding North Korea's ballistic missile activities to maintain a robust defense readiness.

This latest launch occurs just five days before the commencement of the annual South Korea-U.S. joint military exercise, 'Ulchi Freedom Shield' (UFS), scheduled from August 17th to 27th. North Korea has consistently characterized UFS as a rehearsal for an invasion and has responded with military posturing in the past. Earlier this month, the two allies announced their plans for the joint exercise, which will include training scenarios for responding to North Korean threats.
