North Korea has denounced the ongoing US-South Korea joint military exercise, 'Freedom Shield' (UFS), labeling it an 'invasion war practice' and threatening to counter it with 'new strength.' The statement, issued by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on August 19, asserted that adversaries threatening North Korea's sovereignty and security would remain within the range of 'annihilating retaliatory means.'

Pyongyang's reaction comes as the UFS exercise is underway, albeit shortened following a directive from US President Donald Trump. While the North Korean statement did not specifically comment on the reduction of the drills, it emphasized that any 'invasion war practice' conducted by adversaries on the Korean Peninsula and in the region would not yield the results they desire. The statement also warned that escalating military exercises by the US and South Korea are creating a more serious threat to North Korea's security and will lead to further deterioration of the situation on the peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific.

KCNA's commentary detailed the participating units, training content, and objectives of the UFS exercise, arguing that it cannot be dismissed as mere routine military practice. The agency claimed that the exercise components are undergoing dangerous evolution, aimed at enhancing combat readiness against North Korea and securing a strategic advantage in the regional security landscape.
