North Korean Military Base Suffers Severe Damage in Floods; Hundreds of Homes Destroyed

A significant military base in North Korea's Hwanghae Province suffered severe damage from flooding in late July, with hundreds of homes also destroyed. Satellite imagery analyzed by NK News revealed that the large military facility in the center of Singye County was heavily impacted. The flooding also swept away houses in a village across the river and on an island, destroying an estimated 380 single-story homes near the artillery unit.

NK News suggests the sudden flood may have been caused by a partial collapse of the Wangdang No. 2 Reservoir dam, releasing a large volume of water. The destruction of homes, believed to house key personnel operating the base, likely led to thousands of displaced people and casualties, though official figures have not been released.

North Korean media previously acknowledged record rainfall in the Singye region. State media reported that Singye received 264.7 mm of rain on July 20 and 207 mm on July 23. However, these reports did not detail the extent of the damage to military installations or civilian areas.
