North Koreans launch dozens of missiles into the air

North Korea launched approximately ten short-range missiles from the Pyongyang area, according to an unnamed South Korean military source. The launches occurred just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later in the year. This development follows the conclusion of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.

South Korean military authorities confirmed the missiles were short-range. The timing of the launches is notable, as Pyongyang has historically reacted to the U.S.-South Korea drills with missile tests. This year's exercises were scaled back in scope at Trump's directive. North Korea has long condemned these drills, viewing them as a rehearsal for invasion.

During a press conference, President Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with Kim Jong Un, stating it was crucial to "get along" with the leader. Trump also mentioned North Korea's possession of 57 "very powerful" nuclear weapons, while South Korean intelligence estimates range from 80 to 120. Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister, had previously commented that her brother held fond memories of Trump and that their relationship was "great."

The Pentagon stated that the reduced scale of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises did not diminish their training value for U.S. forces. The drills are designed to prepare American and South Korean forces for potential attacks by North Korea on either nation.
