North Vancouver mall shooting captured on video; suspect dies after police intervention

A violent incident unfolded at a North Vancouver mall on Tuesday afternoon, captured on video by numerous witnesses. The footage, widely shared online, depicts Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers drawing their weapons and ordering a suspect to the ground. Witnesses reported that the man initially held a knife to an employee's throat inside a McDonald's at the Westview Shopping Centre.

One witness, Arman Abadi, described intervening in the situation. "He turns his back to me, I wrestle with him, get the knife away from him, throw it under the table and I start fighting," Abadi told Global News. Following the confrontation inside the restaurant, the suspect reportedly entered a vehicle in the parking lot and crashed into several parked cars. Witnesses also claimed to see the suspect attempting to pour gasoline on himself before entering an unoccupied RCMP SUV.

RCMP confirmed that a taser was deployed and several shots were fired. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), British Columbia's police watchdog, has taken over the case. The IIO is appealing for witnesses, particularly those who were at the gas station during the incident or who may have recorded the interaction between the man and the police.
