Northern Flores Most Affected by Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake in NTT, Governor Reports

The northern region of Flores Island, part of Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, bore the brunt of a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake, according to Governor Melki Laka Lena. The quake, centered in Nagekeo Regency, caused widespread disruption across northern Flores, affecting areas including Maumere, Ngada, and Manggarai.

Governor Laka Lena confirmed that provincial authorities are actively working to gather precise data on the damage and any potential casualties. He has been in contact with regents across Flores, urging them to swiftly assess the situation in their respective areas to facilitate the timely distribution of aid and support to those affected.

Immediate priorities include the evacuation of earthquake victims to safer locations. The governor also requested local supermarkets to provide food to survivors while awaiting official aid distribution, with the provincial government pledging to reimburse these businesses. President Prabowo Subianto is reportedly monitoring the post-earthquake response and has dispatched officials to visit the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that as of Saturday morning, 111 aftershocks had been recorded following the initial 7.7 magnitude quake. While the intensity of these subsequent tremors has lessened, with the latest measuring 3.8 magnitude, the BMKG continues to urge residents in Flores to remain vigilant. The tsunami early warning that was issued has since been lifted.
