Indonesia's Disaster Agency Corrects Earthquake Death Toll to One

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has revised the casualty figures from a recent earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province, confirming one death and four injuries. The correction follows an initial report that stated two fatalities. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of 10 km, struck northeast of Labuan Bajo at 06:13 WITA, preceded by a 7.7 magnitude quake northeast of Mbay Nagekeo.

BNPB Head Lt. Gen. TNI Suharyanto stated that data validation and field updates as of 08:00 WIB confirmed one death, a resident of Sikka Regency, and four injuries recorded in both Sikka and Nagekeo Regencies. "BNPB apologizes for this matter in the initial report and will continue to ensure that all information conveyed has gone through the verification process," Suharyanto said in a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday (August 15, 2026).

Based on the results of data updating and validation in the field until 08:00 WIB, one person was recorded dead and four people were injured. The deceased victim was a resident of Sikka Regency, while the injured victims were recorded in Sikka Regency and Nagekeo Regency.

The agency is continuing its efforts to collect data and verify information regarding victims and other impacts of the earthquake. In the Nagekeo Regency, approximately 2,000 residents undertook self-evacuation as a precautionary measure. This action was taken following the earthquake and the issuance of an early tsunami warning, reflecting ongoing concerns about seismic activity in the region.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 46 kilometers northeast of Labuan Bajo. The earlier, stronger earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred northeast of Mbay Nagekeo. The BNPB's swift correction and ongoing verification process aim to provide accurate information to the public and coordinate response efforts effectively.
