Norway’s King Harald V to Be Buried on September 9

Norway’s royal household said the funeral of King Harald V will be held on September 9 at Oslo Cathedral. Church of Norway Presiding Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit will lead the service, which begins at 1 p.m.

Harald V died at age 89 after 35 years on the throne. The royal household said his coffin was moved from hospital to the Red Salon at the palace on the evening of his death and will be transferred to the palace chapel the following afternoon.

Members of the public will be able to pay their respects at the chapel from 2 p.m. on September 1. That day, the new King Haakon VIII will swear an oath before parliament, pledging to defend Norway’s constitution and laws.

Harald was widely viewed as a symbol of Norway’s openness and inclusiveness. He received praise for leading a modern, low-key and approachable monarchy, even as his family faced a series of scandals toward the end of his reign.
