'Not just history': Belongings of Gush Etzion heroes to be publicly displayed for first time

A new educational initiative by the Gush Etzion Regional Council is bringing history to life by publicly displaying, for the first time, the personal belongings of heroes from Israel's War of Independence. This project aims to connect younger generations with the sacrifices made during a pivotal period in the nation's history, moving beyond textbook learning to a more tangible experience.

The exhibit "transfer[s] history from the archive to the daily educational space, so that students not only learn about it but also encounter it live as part of their routine."

The traveling exhibit, currently hosted at the "Neve Hashachar" school in Neve Daniel, features significant items such as the hat of Moshe Silberschmidt, the final commander of Gush Etzion, and the bullet-riddled wool sweater of Palmach fighter and combat medic Uriel Ofek. These artifacts, preserved from the intense battles of 1948, serve as powerful symbols of courage and dedication.
