Nottingham attacks NHS trust faces manslaughter probe

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust faces a corporate manslaughter investigation following the June 2023 attacks in Nottingham. Valdo Calocane, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had previously been under the care of the trust. He was sectioned under the Mental Health Act four times during a two-year period and a doctor had warned he might kill someone. Despite these warnings, Calocane was discharged in September 2022 after failing to attend appointments, with the care team reportedly having "lost" him. The investigation is being conducted by Northumbria Police on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police, which has faced criticism for its handling of interactions with Calocane and the subsequent response to the attacks. A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the investigation and emphasized their full cooperation with both Northumbria Police and the ongoing Statutory Inquiry, chaired by Her Honour Deborah Taylor. The inquiry is expected to hear final submissions later this year. Calocane pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder. He is currently serving an indefinite hospital order in a high-security facility.
