Novo stock plunges after disappointing heart drug trial data

Novo Nordisk's stock experienced a significant drop of about nine percent on Friday afternoon following the release of disappointing Phase 3 research data for its experimental heart disease medication, ziltivekimab. The study's results failed to demonstrate a lower risk of serious cardiovascular events for patients treated with the drug when compared to those receiving a placebo.

The trial aimed to assess whether ziltivekimab could reduce the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes in patients with cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and related inflammation. While the study indicated that the drug successfully lowered levels of the inflammation-associated signaling substance IL-6, it did not establish a correlation with a reduced risk of major cardiovascular incidents.

Despite the trial's outcome, Martin Holst Lange, Novo Nordisk's Head of Research, emphasized that the company's commitment to cardiovascular disease research remains steadfast. "Although ziltivekimab did not achieve the reduction in the risk of serious cardiovascular events that we had hoped for, it does not change our strategic focus on cardiovascular diseases," Lange stated in a company announcement. Ziltivekimab is not yet an approved medication.
