NRW forest fire unit begins mission in Spain

A specialized forest fire unit from North Rhine-Westphalia has commenced its mission in Spain, joining the efforts to combat wildfires in the northwestern region of Castilla y León. The contingent, consisting of more than 50 firefighters and supported by 21 vehicles, is actively engaged in locating and extinguishing smoldering embers, a critical step in preventing the resurgence of fires.

The German firefighters, hailing from cities including Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen, arrived at their destination after a nearly 2,000-kilometer journey. Upon arrival on Saturday, one team immediately began working alongside Spanish units to fight a fire within a nature reserve. The unit's operational base is established in a former monastery, which provides accommodation, a large kitchen, and sanitary facilities, negating the need to set up their own tents.

Cooperation with Spanish authorities is reportedly very effective, enabling efficient work in two shifts. The deployment of the forest fire module, as it is known, was requested by Spanish authorities through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, highlighting the collaborative nature of international disaster response.

The firefighters' primary task involves identifying and extinguishing embers, a dangerous but essential part of wildfire suppression. Their presence and expertise are crucial in supporting Spain's efforts during a challenging fire season.
