NSCDC, Kogi monarchs partner to curb illegal coal mining

The Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Ankpa Traditional Council in Kogi State have formed an alliance to tackle illegal coal mining and foster legitimate mining operations within Ankpa Local Government Area. This collaborative effort was announced following a courtesy visit by a delegation of Mining Marshals, led by Commander ACC John Attah, to the palace of the Ejeh of Ankpa, HRH Abubakar Ahmed.

Commander Attah conveyed the goodwill of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, and the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi. He urged residents to support only licensed mining operators and report any non-compliance with Community Development Agreements (CDAs) by these companies. Attah stressed that Ankpa's rich coal and other mineral deposits should drive economic growth, not contribute to environmental damage, insecurity, or loss of life.

The mineral resources with which Ankpa has been blessed should not become a curse to the people. Following our engagement with the traditional council, anyone who continues to engage in illegal mining will be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the law.

The Ejeh of Ankpa pledged the traditional council's full support for responsible and lawful mining practices. He stated that a well-regulated mining sector would create employment for local youth while safeguarding lives and the environment. The monarch declared zero tolerance for illegal and unregulated mining, assuring the Federal Government of close cooperation with the Mining Marshals and other relevant bodies.

The Mining Marshals commander expressed concern over the increasing number of deaths linked to unregulated mining and vowed to end unsafe practices. The NSCDC remains committed to sanitizing the mining sector through strict enforcement of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act and strengthening partnerships with traditional institutions and host communities.
