NTT earthquake death toll reaches 91, over 1,200 injured

The death toll from the earthquake in Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province has climbed to 91, with an additional 1,286 individuals sustaining injuries. The latest figures were released by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of BNPB's Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center, detailed the fatalities across various districts, including Manggarai, Manggarai Timur, Sikka, Ende, Manggarai Barat, Nagekeo, and Ngada. The victims included 40 males, 48 females, and three whose gender was still under identification. A significant portion of the deceased were identified as elderly, with children and adults also among the casualties.

51 percent of the deceased victims were caused by the direct impact of the earthquake such as being hit by building debris, while the rest, 49 percent, died from indirect impacts.

Panjaitan explained that 51% of the fatalities resulted from direct impacts, such as being trapped under collapsed buildings. The remaining 49% died from indirect consequences of the disaster. This highlights the widespread devastation caused by the seismic event.

Until today it has reached 5,688 times, the largest magnitude was 6.2 and the smallest was 1.1. Aftershocks felt by residents today were 130 times. The series of aftershocks shows a temporal pattern that is not yet simple.

Since the initial earthquake, the region has experienced a staggering 5,688 aftershocks, with the largest registering a magnitude of 6.2. While 130 aftershocks were felt on Sunday alone, authorities anticipate these tremors will continue for approximately three to four more weeks. The ongoing seismic activity underscores the lingering instability in the affected area.
