NTT, NTB, and Jakarta Named Co-Hosts for Indonesia's 2028 National Sports Week

The provinces of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and the capital city of Jakarta have officially been selected to co-host the 2028 National Sports Week (PON) XXII. The announcement was formalized with the handover of the Ministerial Decree on the Host Designation and related organizational documents to the respective governors at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Jakarta.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, stressed that the 2028 PON must be conducted efficiently and transparently, adhering to President Prabowo Subianto's directives. He called for good governance throughout the preparation and execution phases, aiming to enhance national sports achievements. Thohir expressed hope for a smooth event, emphasizing transparency in all administrative aspects to prevent the recurrence of past issues.

I hope the organization of PON XXII in 2028 runs well. All administrative aspects must be carried out transparently so that various problems that occurred in previous implementations do not happen again.

The minister also highlighted the importance of prioritizing sports that contribute to national athlete development, positioning PON as a crucial platform for preparing athletes for international events like the SEA Games, Asian Games, and Olympics. The 2028 PON is planned to feature 21 sports disciplines.

Gubernur of NTB, Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, affirmed his region's readiness, explaining that the allocation of sports between NTB and NTT would be based on existing venue availability to avoid large-scale new construction. He noted NTB's experience hosting national and international events, including MotoGP Mandalika, as valuable preparation. Governor of NTT, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, pledged collaboration with NTB and Jakarta to ensure the success of PON 2028, aiming for success in organization, achievement, and administration, alongside tangible economic benefits for the local communities.
